Times are tough at FM talker WCKG-FM. First, the station loses Howard Stern and replaces him with the lackluster Rover, who whose program barely even registered in the ratings. They replace Rover with the New York-based XM duo of Opie & Anthony, and the numbers drop even further.
In the meantime, the station has been anchored by longtime afternoon drive host Steve Dahl. In fact, some have even intimated that the sole reason the station has not flipped to Spanish is because of Dahl’s enormous guaranteed contract, and presumably because Dahl doesn’t speak Spanish.
Now, Robert Feder is reporting that Dahl has dumped sidekick Wendy Snyder from the show:
Snyder, whose contract was set to expire in March, is a six-year veteran of WCKG. She has spent the last five years as traffic reporter and secondary sidekick for Dahl.
“I had a unique opportunity to work with a couple of the best in the business,” she said. “Now I’m looking forward to moving on. I can’t wait to get back on the air.”
The move raises a number of questions, chief of which is whether the move was a cost-cutting measure on the part of the CBS-owned station or whether there was a personality conflict between Dahl and Snyder. Either way, Snyder’s departure can’t be a positive sign for the struggling station.
