WMVP’s Sweetheart Deal with the Bulls
Ed Sherman follows up his ongoing coverage of the Bulls jumping from WCKG to WMVP with a story today that seems to lack some critical details.
Sherman talked with Steve Schanwald, the team’s executive vice president of operations, who was fulsome in his praise of WMVP and the opportunity the team will have with their return to the station:
“Being on an all-sports station means we’ll reach our core audience all day long,” Schanwald said. “They’re committed to promoting us.”
Sherman goes on to recount some of the financial details of the deal:
… the Bulls will in effect buy the radio time from the station and sell ads themselves. The team used the same plan last year with WCKG, generating an estimated $2 million in revenue.
In his initial story about the possible move of the team from WCKG, Sherman estimated that the Bulls were paying in the neighborhood of $400,000 to be carried on the station. Our sources tell us that number is somewhat inflated, and pegged the actual number at closer to $225,000.
With this new deal, however, Sherman omits an important detail in his article — the price the Bulls will be paying WMVP for this new deal.
The reason for this omission should embarrass WMVP, that’s because the Bulls won’t be paying for the airtime at all. They’ll be getting it for free.
WMVP has been so desperate to carry any play-by-play coverage of a major Chicago team since losing the Bulls and White Sox that GM Jim Pastor agreed to carry all 82 games in exchange for promotional consideration only.
