Jump on the WCKG Radio Carousel
Well, the weekend came and went. We heard a lot of Steve Dahl. Monday morning came and went. More Steve Dahl.
Now, CBS Radio is shuffling all of its formats through the 105.9 dial position.
Does anyone have a clue — including CBS Radio execs — what is going on?
There are a couple of schools of thought on this one.
It did seem intentional that WCKG pulled the old head fake on flipping to Christmas music on Friday afternoon. If nothing else, WLIT took the bait and flipped a week earlier than they had been promising. If WCKG is still planning on flipping to Fresh FM format, then forcing your main competitor into their annual yuletide stunt as early as possible makes sense … but only if you immediately counter with a flip to the aforementioned Fresh FM format … which WCKG has not yet done. Hard to tell if this was a strategic move.
There are some who think that CBS is treading water right now, essentially calling audibles with this station. Perhaps they don’t have a clue what they are doing. Or perhaps that know what they’re doing, but aren’t planning on launching until early next year. In which case, whatever they do with 105.9 in the meantime is inconsequential.
Although it does seem like a lost opportunity for WCKG to not try to steal away any Lite FM listeners who might be somewhat averse to hearing “Jingle Bells” this early in the year. That still might the plan, and CBS is simply taking its time to make sure the launch is done right.
If nothing else, CBS has captured the attention of radio geeks across Chicagoland, who are eagerly waiting for their chance to criticize whatever they do with 105.9.
