WCKG pulls the old switcheroo

3 November 2007 342 views 3 Comments

With radio geeks across Chicagoland anticipating WCKG’s flip to Christmas music at 7pm on Friday, the CBS Radio station did the opposite of what everyone expected … They did nothing.

Seven o’clock came and went, and the station continued playing “The Best of Steve Dahl”.

So what was all that about? Perhaps, the evil geniuses at WCKG were hoping to force the hand of WLIT, which made its annual flip to Christmas music at 8:30am on Friday. Or perhaps WCKG knew that WLIP was planning on flipping on Friday all along, and just wanted to get into their heads. Either way, everyone is still expecting WCKG to become Fresh FM on Monday.

Will the relatively early yuletide hiatus of WLIT give Fresh FM two months to position itself for long-term competition? Or will WLIT simply benefit from a few extra weeks of inflated ratings that will quickly disappear in early 2008, regardless of the competition?

Just discovered this website, and I’m glad I did. As a longtime poster at the chicagosportsfan.com message boards, as well as chicagolandradioandmedia.com, I’m glad I found another place for media news.

I use to write at ChicagoMediaMonitor.com, until the owner disappeared and allowed the website to expire back in 2005.
