Don Wade has spent much of his twenty years as morning drive boss at WLS taking shots at liberal icons like Jesse Jackson and Bill Clinton. It’s part of what Wade does, and his audience has been eating it up for years.

But as Wade nears the end of his current contract, he may have finally offended eve his most ardent conservative fans. On Friday morning, Wade suggested on the air that the media covering the Obama campaign is so enamored by the candidate that they’d let him get away with murder … literally. Wade went on to describe a scenario in which Obama, who is visiting his ailing grandmother in Hawaii, smothers his grandmother with a pillow, suffocating her.

Even Wade’s wife and co-host Roma seemed aghast by the suggestion.  Reaction from listeners has been swift and negative. While Wade’s point about the media may be valid, it does seem to be incredibly poor taste to suggest that Obama would suffocate his own ailing grandmother.

Maybe Don Wade knows that he’s coming to the end of his career and simply doesn’t care about the consequences of making such remarks. His contract with WLS ends in a few weeks, and while published reports suggest that the station would like to re-sign Wade and his wife, perhaps the Wades would rather call it quits and ride off into the sunset.

Or perhaps Wade simply has nothing left in the tank. He’s used up his best material on the Clintons and Jacksons, and he’s phoning it in. If he wasn’t thinking about calling it quits before, maybe he ough to consider it now.

And to think, Mancow might soon be considered the most responsible and mature broadcaster on staff at WLS when he joins the station next week.
