Williams Tapped to Replace O’Dell on WGN
There are times in life when you wake up and because of your life’s circumstances, you feel like you’ve won the lottery. That must have been how WGN-AM’s John Williams felt yesterday when he was officially tapped to take over the morning shift on the station. Williams will take over for Spike O’Dell and will continue the tradition of O’Dell, Bob Collins, and Wally Phillips — the succession of WGN morning men, dating back to the 1960′s.
In a memo to station staffers, vice president and general manager Tom Langmyer said:
“Spike, Bob and Wally left big shoes,” Langmyer said in his memo. “I have no doubt that John will wear them well and with great pride and dedication. ”
Langmyer cited Williams’ “passion, dedication, community involvement, creativity and commitment in building WGN’s brand across multiple platforms.”
The move of Williams into mornings ends speculation that Steve Cochran would move from afternoons into the morning slot, as had been rumored for months, ever since O’Dell announced that he would be retiring at the end of this year. O’Dell’s last show will be December 12.
With this shuffle, it leaves a hole in WGN’s line-up, as Williams’ previous timeslot of 1-4pm will soon be vacant. There has been some speculation that Garry Meier may be angling for that job.
UPDATE: Here’s the official announcement from WGN.
