North Launches Web Sports Station

When he left WSCR-AM the Score last summer, Mike North promised that he had a lot of avenues that he still wanted to explore. Last fall, North began webcasting a daily two-hour show through the website of Wildfire, the local restaurant chain.

Earlier this year, he reunited with longtime partner Dan Jiggetts to launch the “Monsters in the Morning” show on Comcast SportsNet. The two also pen a column in the Sun-Times on Fridays.
He also launched a short-lived sports handicapping site.

Now, North is expanding his portfolio to include an entire on-line sports station. The site, which has been dubbed “Chicago Sports Webio“, will simulcast North’s Comcast show, along with a line-up that features Teddy Greenstein, Jonathan Hood, and Chet Coppock, among others. Longtime WSCR-AM fixture Jesse Rogers will act as the program director.

The venture will be co-owned by North and David Hernandez, the CEO of Next Step Medical Staffing, the title sponsor of North’s Comcast show.

In a city that already had two all-sports stations, it will be a an uphill battle for the upstart web operation to make inroads. Having names like North, Jiggetts, and Coppock onboard will help, but webcasting still largely remains a niche field. North is the king of self-promotion, so there’s no doubt that he will expend enormous amounts of energy to grow the brand. The real question comes down to whether or not the content will be compelling enough to attract a large audience.

The site promises a “major announcement” in the near future. Is it possible that the longtime nemesis of Mike North, and former Scorehead, Dan McNeil will relaunch his career on the new site?
